Build Your Own Speakers

July 30th, 2007 · No Comments

When asked about high fidelity audio, most guys will tell you that they’ve got the best system on the market, or they would like to buy a top-of-the-line system if they don’t already have one. If you’re a handy sort and can operate some rudimentary power tools then this may be of some interest to you. DIY speaker kits have been around for some time, but often the result is just a cacophony, and you end up throwing the flimsy boxes in the garbage and keeping the drivers for that next project. Well ditch the drivers and check out the free builds over at Zaph|Audio. These designs are created for enthusiast, by the enthusiast John “Zaph” Krutke.

If you’re looking for bang-for-buck, one of his best designs is the Bargain Aluminum MTM(or BAMTM). MTM (which stands for mid-woofer, tweeter, mid-woofer) speakers will work well at every position in your surround sound system, or simply as your stereo mains. With a low cost aluminum driver, simple crossovers, and easy to read blueprints this is a snap to afford and build. Drivers cost $78.68/speaker, crossover parts $21.50/speaker, and building material around $40/speaker you are looking at around $140 per speaker. Best of all you’ll learn a whole bunch and have the satisfaction in the end of knowing you built the beauties yourself.
