Third-Party lens manufacturers such as Sigma and Tamron have long been the kings of the niche market of the single, multipurpose travel lens. The Sigma and Tamron 18-200mm lenses (and more recent versions with OS) are a travelers dream when it comes to value for money and range. Nikon has had an entry in this market for a couple of years and while the optics are reportedly excellent, the roughly 2x price tag can be off-putting for cost-conscious traveler. Recently though, there has been some movement in this somewhat stale market, in the form of the recently released Tamron AF 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 Di-II XR LD Aspherical IF and Canon EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS lenses. Click to read on…

Tamron 18-250mm

Both of the new lenses are designed specifically for ASP/C-sized sensors, in other words the prosumer DSLR market. The Canon 18-200mm is obviously not offered for any camera outside the Canon range, and is positioned as a late entry to compete alongside the Nikon 18-200m with above-par performance and above-par pricing. A nice touch is the addition of IS found in most of Canon’s DSLR targeted products.

The Tamron lens is intriguing, because it provides a never-before seen combination of wide-angle and 13.8x super-zoom capabilities. The price point is also interesting, sitting in showrooms next to the Sigma 18-200mm with OS.

The pros over at Digital Photography Review have reviewed the Canon 18-200mm, and a review for the Tamrom 18-250 can be found at PopPhoto.

Once in a while I will make the mistake of holding down the CTRL button when I press enter, only to see that I’ve forwarded a half-composed unprofessional message to a high-paying client. Here’s a quick tip that might save your bacon: add a rule in Outlook to delay all outgoing messages for 1 minute. Doing this will ensure that you have a chance to correct your mistakes before they go out the door.

This is a guest post from Brian.

Over the past couple months I made the transition from an everyday $120 20″ Toshiba TV to a $2000 42″ Pioneer Plasma TV. It took a lot of thinking, saving, and it was most certainly worth every penny.

I had an advantage of background knowledge and HDTV viewing experience since both my dad and brother own Plasma TV’s (43″ Pioneer Elite and a 42″ Panasonic respectively). Of this knowledge and experience, a few things I found helpful to know are as follows:

Plasma’s reflect a lot of light, so beware of the positioning of the TV in relation to windows. Plasma TV’s reflect far more light than LCD’s (or so I find at least) and therefore it is important to consider where the TV will be located.

Beware of most LCD warranties. Most warranties on an LCD will have some sort of next to impossible situation of “if 10 pixels in a row burn out”. I’m no mathematician but considering LCD’s have millions of pixels, I’m pretty sure the chance of burning out 10 pixels in a row is highly unlikely.

Viewing angle is important. Go to your local FutureShop and you’ll notice that as you walk by the larger than life TV’s, the better ones (and subsequently more expensive) provide a better image from a sharper angle. Once again, think where this TV is going to go. Chances are not everyone will be in direct line of the TV and so it’s important that the TV looks great from all reasonable angles.

480,720,1080,I,P, what does it all mean? The number is the number of horizontal lines that your TV can display. The more lines displayed, the better the picture. The letter – I or P – stands for Interlaced or Progressive. Interlaced implies that the lines that are displayed alternate. So for example, 480I will display only 240 lines at any given time. 240 lines alternate with 240 other lines. Of course this happens faster than your eyes can distinguish. On the other hand, 480P will display all 480 lines at any given time. Once again, more lines displayed at a single instance will give a better picture. Traditional cable displays at 480I. High Definition cable is capable of 720P. Blue-Ray and HD Discs are capable of 1080P.

Resolution. The higher the resolution, the sharper the picture. Enough said.

HDMI inputs. For me personally, it was important to have more than 1 HDMI input. I don’t know about you, but the thought of having to switch your HDMI connected up-converter-DVD player with your HDMI connected PS3 doesn’t sound too appealing. I ensured that any TV I considered had at least 2 HDMI inputs.

Like I said, these are a few points I thought were important to know when I went shopping for an HDTV. By no means is the list above a comprehensive list of everything to consider when buying your first HDTV. At the end of the day, pick an HDTV that “fits your budget” (when does buying a $2000+ TV ever seem to fit the budget?), and a TV that looks the best through your eyes. You be the judge of what looks best. Don’t let the sales guy persuade you to spend an extra 2 grand just because the specs are better. You be the judge if it actually looks better.

A $1 million dollar laptop. The tech specs are pretty boring but it comes with a diamond ring that serves as the power button and can actually be taken off and worn. Oh and the ring even acts as a security feature unlocking the computer. It’s probably the first time a security device is more desirable than what it guards.

The laptops are fully customizable with a selection of leathers, real woods and leathers.

The three year wait is finally over for die-hard gamers as Microsoft and Bungie have release the latest in the Halo series, Halo 3. I remember when Halo 2 came out and the insane fun that followed, and I can only imagine how awesome this version will be with high-def graphics and new weapons for a beatuiful slaughter of the Convenant. Some early reviews have commented on the limited single player game but everyone know that Halo is all about multiplayer, and that is where this game shines. This iteration builds on the co-op play of Halo 2 allowing up to 4 players to team up online to complete levels in co-op mode, and the multiplayer mode can support 16 players per level. I can’t wait to get my copy and I’d suggest you go out and do the same.

It’s overdone. Everyone’s talking about it and yes it’s cool, but there’s still phones out there that are even crazier.

Check these phones out (but be warned the price tags rival some peoples cars and even houses).

The LG KE850 Prada cell phone by LG is astounding. It was the first touch screen phone on the market, is as sleek as the iPhone, but packs the punch of the Prada name. It’ll set you back $800, but your friends will go green right away.

The next eye catcher is the Serene by Samsung. I have no idea how you’re supposed to use it, but it was released in November and is reputed to be one of the slickest operating phones out there. You can pick it up for $1,275. Oh don’t worry the prices get worse.

Check out the last two phones below.

The next two phones are from Vertu. If you haven’t heard of them, you don’t make enough money to buy one. They come with a “lifestyle” button that will instantly connect you with a conceirge anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. You need a pizza, no problem. You like Italian pizza, they’ll book you a private plane to Italy. Seriously. The first phone has diamonds, sapphires and rubies and retails for $71,000. The second is the signature cobra. It boasts a pear-cut diamond, one round white diamone, two emerald eyes and over 400 rubies. Only 8 are being made so if you can justify spending $310,000 on a cell phone you’d better call quick.

Everybody knows that computers and cows go together like milk and cookies, so Lenovo went ahead and put together this piece of art: the Thinkpad Reserve Edition. Made for the executive on the go this model sports a 12.1″ screen, and an external antenna for the on-board wireless WAN adapter that will hook you up with the interweb wherever you have cell service. Impressively, and unlike other ultra-portables, the latest in Lenovo’s X61 lineup has the latest in Intel’s Core 2 Duo mobile processor family, 2GB of RAM, and enough juice to keep you running the entire overseas flight to Paris. Only being produced in limited quantities and wrapped in hand-stitched leather, this premium notebook carries a premium price at around $5000. More pics inside.

It’s designed for small lot artisan winemaking. The state of the art pod integrates fermentation, pressing and ageing in one elegant unit. Temperature control is handled with thermoelectric heating and cooling to ensure the perfect ageing. And the company will even source the grapes for you – it doesn’t get much easier than that.

Oh and the software will beam all of the info to your PC where you can watch your progress as an amateur winemaker. After winning a design award in 2006 the pod sold out and they’re now taking names for the 2007 waiting list. For $3,500 you can hopefully take one home and start impressing all your friends.

This time around we’re showcasing the Pure-Fi DreamPremium Bedroom Music System for iPod, an alarm clock slash speaker system. It’s got an external display that let’s you see what’s playing from in your groggiest of states and it charges your iPod as well so you can dash out the door (late as usual) with your fully charged nano or video iPod. There’s also a wireless remote so you can set it up in your living room and entertain your friends. As with pretty well anything made for the iPod it doesn’t look to bad either so you won’t want to hide it away in your bedroom.

The hot new DSLR also includes the lens-cleaning function found in the entry-level Canon Digital Rebel XTi, a huge 3-inch LCD monitor and maybe best of all the Live View Function which has been missing from many DSLRs in the past. Live View allows you to view the photo in the LCD before snapping the pic rather than after, something that I’m sure will attract many of those who are used to point-and-shoot cameras. I’m curious to see what lenses it will kit with, if at all… the 28-135mm shown below looks like an awesome kit lens.
