Choosing A Wallet

July 21st, 2007 · No Comments

When choosing a wallet, people will often go with the old standby: get the same one you’re replacing. Why is it that people can’t get out of their comfort zone and do something crazy like buying brown, not black? Take the following into account the next time you need to replace that thing that looks like a tattered shoe wrapped around a romance novel.

  1. Needs. Do you really need to carry around every one of your membership cards, credit cards, debit cards, identification cards, rewards cards, business cards, contact sheets, childhood photos, receipts, and coupons? Probably not. Try this: Check your wallet right now and if you need to unfold something to recognize what it is, remove it. I’m not saying you need to throw it out, just put it in a safe place.
  2. Front pocket or back pocket. Yes, there is a difference. Front pocket wallets generally have a smaller footprint and either have a single fold or none at all. Back pocket wallets can have two or more folds and will hold much more.
  3. Material. You can get wallets made from just about anything these days, not just leather; cork to duct tape to plastic.
  4. Money clip. Sometimes all you need is cash and identification, like when going to the club. Some wallets will come with a money clip built in, some with a detachable money clip

I learned long ago that for me a large front pocket wallet is all I need and that sitting on that brick my back pocket was doing nothing for my squash game.
