Planning Your First Backpacking Trip

July 25th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Your first backpacking adventure will be one of the unforgettable experiences of your life. There’s a ton of decisions to be made but there are three things you need to sort out first.

  1. How? First figure out how you’re going to afford your trip. Where you’ll go depends a lot on how much you have to spend and whether you want to work while traveling. In my experience it’s the best money you’ll ever spend. Your first backpacking adventure will open your eyes and let you expand your comfort zone.
  2. Who? The second most important question is – who do you want to travel with? There’s nothing like a backpacking trip to find out who your real friends are. You’ll spend a ton of time with them and get to learn who they really are. I’d suggest inviting the people who make you laugh, are easygoing and willing to try new things. And of course, going solo is a blast too. You’ll meet more people and you can do whatever you want.
  3. Where? I actually think this is less important than most people think. You don’t want to be going to a war torn country and if you’re looking for historical culture, Europe’s a better choice than Australia. But wherever you go it’s the people who will make your trip. You’re going to meet a ton and they’ll be more memorable than any place you go. Another consideration of course is how much it costs. I went to Thailand so I could live like a king for two months, rather than going to Ireland where I would have eaten peanut butter sandwiches for a month.

Once you have these questions answered you’re well on your way to getting on the plane. Research the heck out of the place, have a blast and take lots of pictures.
